This painting of one of my favourite horses was completed early in 2002 after a visit to
Aston Upthorpe Stud in Oxfordshire where the now 19yr old Mtoto has resided since he retired in 1989.
Mtoto was a superb racehorse. Having been cured of problem feet he rose to prominence as a 4yo
when he won the Gr.3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes (Sandown) followed by the Gr.2 Prince of Wales's
Stakes (Royal Ascot) and the Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes (Sandown) where he beat the Derby winner
Reference Point in a thrilling finish.
At 5 he was arguably even better. Again he won the Prince of Wales's Stakes and the Eclipse Stakes before
beating a top class field in the Gr.1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. He ended the season
with a gallant second after meeting trouble in running in the Gr.1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and was
voted 'Horse of the Year'.
As a stallion he has sired Shaamit, winner of the 1996 Derby as well as Group winners Presenting, (also placed 3rd to Lammtarra in the
1995 Derby), Arbatax, Attitre (also 2nd Italian Oaks), Book at Bedtime, Celeric (Ascot Gold Cup), Crown of Light (also 3rd Oaks), Maylane,
Mdudu, Mot Juste (also 2nd Irish Oaks), Mousse Glacee (also 2nd Prix de Diane), and Tarfshi.
He is also Broodmare Sire of Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes winner Compton Admiral.
