GEORGES' GUINEAS
Oil on board, 20 x 40 inches

Another quirky but ultimately brilliant horse, George Washington was never destined to be a back-number with such an illustrious name. A brilliant 2000 Guineas winner (defeating subsequent Derby winner Sir Percy) he famously refused to go into the winners enclosure after his victory.
Retired to stud, he proved infertile and was controversially brought back into training, his place at Coolmore being taken by another son of Danehill, Holy Roman Emperor.  He never  quite regained the brilliance of his three-year-old career and was  fatally injured in desperate conditions in the Breeders Cup  Classic of 2007.

The picture above shows Subsequent Group 1 sprint winner Red Clubs
leading Derby winner Sir Percy and Final Verse as George Washington (number 7) waits to pounce.

George Washington has sired one foal, a filly, daughter of the Rainbow Quest mare Flawlessly, born in February 2008 at the Irish National Stud.
